Major Blues Scale
The major blues scale is simply the major pentatonic scale with the flattened 3rd “blue” note added.
Our normal naming notes rule cannot apply in some Keys because the flattened 3rd note is between the 2nd and 3rd notes.
However, because we are flattening the 3rd note then this will take the naming conventions applied to the key signatures:
“Eb” in the C major blues scale, and “C” in the A major blues scale.

Major Blues Scale Patterns Across the Fretboard
The diagrams below show generic patterns of the major blues scale.
The red note is the root note of the scale, for example:
– if you wish to play the C major blues scale then the red root note will be the note of C
– if you wish to play the G major blues scale then the red root note will be the note of G and so on.
